why is the neck sooo long

a night heron with the neck like this ?? when they go for a fish you bet ya , but what do you think made this one look like this :huh

    not maybe, you Dennis be right on, but this was in a group of ducks and coots.They let me know first something was up. I spun around and 3' from me and about 4' of the ground this juv blew thru .I had a long lens and tripod so no shoot :cry But I did not give up [the only reason it did not get a meal I think was me standing there ] it had to take a little break. In an hour or so I saw it hunting 3 times but has a bit to learn yet it does not give up .As I was leaving it was screaming for mom or dad .At least it was working and NOT camping out on wall street mwink.gif

    Thanks I think it was the same one that I found eating a duck ,but I really think it was missing mom and dad with that free food
