I'm new to shooting hight level sports, but by recommendation of a fellow photographer, the AD of a local Community College in Buffalo has asked me to come and shoot their winter sports season. I have to get back in touch with him at some point this week to find time to meet, but I have NO idea what to charge. The sports will be bowling, hockey, basketball, and swimming & diving. In case he's not willing to throw a number out there, I need to at least have some idea what to charge. I understand it varies a lot, and it depends a bit on how many events for each sport I would shoot, but ANY advice or input would be appreciated...even just some input on whether you generally charge per shot that they buy, or per event etc...Thanks in advance.

You need to find out the budget of the school and determine what you want to get out of it and how many events you want to cover. You need to find out there expectations of what they want covered and how many pictures they want. If they want you to be there the whole game, consider your driving time as well. There are just too many variables to give you a number to charge. You want to charge fair value because you will be working hard. You also do not want to cheapen photography in your area either. Probably the best way to do this is figure up how many hours they want you to cover an event and come up with a package deal based on the sport. Some sports don't require much time, some will.

To sum it up, find out what they want in regards to pictures, how they are going to be used(are they going to sell them?), how long they want you to stay, etc. I will say anything less than $150 for a couple of hours would be taking advantage of you.

Thanks for the response. Yea I get that this is a tough question to answer. Basically I'm gonna see if
I can get an offer out of him and if not, than try to come up with some
Sport specific packages once I get more details.
