Finally got out to take some photos for this challenge. Currently focusing on "Street" and "Souvenirs from Sweden." I have entered #1 shot but am hoping for input on which of these shots - if any - is a good fit for this challenge.

Thank you!

1. Street Scene

Have 2 other street shots as well.

2. Street in the Rain

3. Second Street Pike at Night

4. Six Swedish Souvenirs

Is #4 totally reliant on the title or does the flag help?

The Swedish Souvenirs aren't doing it for me. Of the street scenes, I like #3 the best; but I wonder, if a reshoot is possible, if you could take a photo just a bit earlier--twilight-ish, so that the lights still show up but you can capture a few more details in the rest of the photo. I may even like #2 better than #3 if shot earlier in the day.

Thanks for taking a look at these - especially with the holiday weekend almost here! I'll think about reshoot earlier in the day. Twilight is a bit problematic this time of year because traffic is terrible during rush hour, so we'd mostly see parked cars and I'd have trouble getting home. :) These were quick edits in Lightroom so perhaps I'll try reworking them to bring out the buildings a bit more without blowing out the street lights and the traffic lights. Have a few other ideas that may work.

I like #3 the best too. The extra color in the lights is perfect.

Great to have input on these. #3 is the one my son zeroed in on as well. I wasn't sure about the driveway at the lower right and/or cropping the bottom more. I'll work on these some more - in between cleaning and cooking.

I'm partial to #1. I like the reflection of the lights on the pavement, and the effect is more pronounced without the foreground that you included in #3. I also like the lights in #1... but as seen in my own entries, I tend to like photos darker than a lot of commenters here.

I like #1 best too - it just looks "right" as a night scene to me.

Upon first look, my initial fave is #3 because I like that you can see the grass. The balance of the detail even though it's dark out works for me. I do like #1, but feel it's a tad too dark. #4 is not as visually interesting. GP

I'll see what I can do to get the exposure "right" for the sides - a little brighter than #1 - but leave the light trails pretty much alone. Have been busy cooking and cleaning, so haven't revisited this yet. But so glad to have lots of input! I haven't done light trails in ages - not since our kids were young and I propped a film SLR camera up on a balcony when I saw a good opportunity to try this.

It was rainy and cold last night when I was shooting this street - putting a sleeve over my camera and tripod. I did bracket my shots, so I do have some other options. What happens if you combine two or three exposure - each with their own configuration of light trails because of the long exposure? A mess?

Thanks Jake, Chad, and GP for taking the time to give input on these! Much appreciated!

Love #1! So funny Gretchen, but since I'm also an "S", I almost did exactly the same thing. It was raining the other night and the roads were gorgeous.

They were indeed! Hope you stayed warmer and drier than I did. :D

Thanks for your input on these!

    Hi Gretchen,
For what it's worth, below is the CC that I have prepped for your image in the galleries. Some pre-crit.......
    P

"Saph- -I like the idea of the light streaks for street scene. The red streaks have a beautiful deep saturation. My only wish would have been for the ‘scene’ to be more dynamic. I can’t really tell what the structure is and if it has significance to the scene. If you haven’t already, take a peek at Johnloguk’s stuff. John’s done a lot of long exposure and many times works just around dusk, so the backgrounds can be a bit more evident. Not sure if that was what you were going for, but worth looking at his images. Thanks for the early input and your suggestion to look at what Johnloguk's been doing. Appreciate it and will see what I can do between now and Monday night. This particular street would be close to a parking lot on a normal weekday at twilight - this time of year - but traffic may be lighter over the weekend. I am also hoping to rework the post-processing on the shots I took the other night, having done a very quick job on them in LR. That may help a bit.

Thought about shooting "sons stuffing themselves with stuffing" today, but passed it up. I think stuffing is their favorite part of the meal. They will happily prepare it themselves to make sure there are two kinds available.

    Thanks again!

    Gretchen,

Good idea for the contest... I'm thinking disappearing horizon for a street shot... thumb.gif

Froch, I just finished browsing through John's galleries and found them very inspiring. I often attempt to shoot similar subjects, so it is fun to see his approach and great results. Thanks for suggesting that I look at his galleries.
