Ordinarily I'm not a huge fan of them either. Although I'm digging the contrast in this one. I'm thinking this might look amazing on a large metallic print. Any hints as to your processing? It's got some characteristics of an HDR.

The actual photo was pretty dark except for the sun ray across the middle and in the sky. It was late afternoon. Split the photo and did the sky and ground separately, tonal contrast is what brings the sky detail out.
I evened out the tones in Lightroom then dodge and burned them back in how I wanted them for the contrast.
Agree b&w does look great in this image, I must say I'm not a fan of b&w in landscapes but I does work here.
Would like to see original as a comparison
You said it, it takes drama in the sky and in this case the mountains to have the makings of a nice B/W. The texture of the trees and slight ripples in the water really help as well. Nice work

Seems a lot of people don't like B&W landscapes but for a shot like this with dramatic light and clouds.....it makes such a difference.
