So here's the thing,

My site http://www.marcusrichphotography.com has been up and running since 7th November, I have registered with Google and set the necessary settings, within the Smugmug control panel, to be seen on the web. To see if it all works, I entered the following keywords, clicked save and went off to Google to see if it worked, but alas, it did not.

Search Engine Settings & Optimizations

Homepage Meta Description
Experienced London based photographer, for weddings, portraits, travel, performing arts, nature and sports photography.

Homepage Meta Keywords
london photographer, weddings, wedding photographer, portraits, portrait photographer london, action, sports, extreme sports, photographs, photography, photos, images, performing arts photography, Travel photography, nature photography, photographer palmers green,

I’ve had 95000 photo views & 23,203 site visitors, so thought I’d be pretty highly ranked, especially if I narrowed the search down using my keywords, so taking my name and a keyword, i.e. Marcus rich * photographer palmers green, I thought it’d be top of the page, but nothing, not even on the first 34 pages....

Am I doing something wrong? Help.

Marcus.

    Google updates are not immediate.

If I search for Marcus Rich photography you are on the first page of results. But - the meta keywords that you entered apparently are not used by Google, per http://googlewebmastercentral.blogspot.com/2009/09/google-does-not-use-keywords-meta-tag.html.

You have very few keywords specified on your photos, and the galleries that I looked at on your site do not have a text description.

Take a look at http://help.smugmug.com/customer/portal/articles/93327 for some SEO info.

Hi Denise, thanks very much for your reply.

Adding keywords to my galleries and photos' are next on my list of things to do.

My next question is, what is the use of meta keywords, I've tried searching on other engines, using the same search criteria, but nada, however, this forum thread comes top of the list. I guess I need to incorporate all my keywords within my site, i.e. in my bio, or as you say, on my galleries and photographs.

Denise, originally the keywords meta WAS used for search indexing up until the late 1990's. BUT, after it became apparent to Google that people were abusing it's use (stuffing it with keywords), Google decided to take it off their indexing list. Today it really serves no purpose.
