These rare birds are all stunning examples of the Grumman F4F " Wildcat ". The odds of catching three of them at any one show is hard to calculate. There were actually four of them here at one time ( unbelievable ) but the fourth one flew out early and was gone before I got to them.
When WWII started, the Wildcat was the U.S. Navy's front-line fighter. In many ways, it was greatly inferior to the better Japanese planes it had to go up against.....particularly the AM6 " Zero ". The Wildcat, however, had some critical strengths that helped even the battle: It had better armament; it had better armor to protect the pilot; it was very ruggedly built and could absorb a terrific amount of punishment; and it was about as fast. Additionally, the Americans had excellent training and they developed some very effective combat techniques. The pilots that flew the Wildcat, and knew how to maximize its strong points, were able to give the Japs a handful to deal with.
