It is strange , I just don't get the Low Key under control as I would like.
Below two attempts, comments for improvements welcome.

I don't think they are bad at all. I like the effect.

Might be cropped too tight for low key. I feel low key needs more body to the photograph to support the darkness. Just an opinion.

TXS, that is the kind of input I was looking for...

One of my few low keys. Does the added space add support?

I was once told that when items in the photograph exceed life size they become distorted. Definitely that nose is larger than life.

I'm fine with the tight crop... I like the effect it has. The biggest issue for me in both of the first two is that the reflections/catchlights in the eyes seem to be too strong and overpower the iris/whites of the eyes, especially the first one. Other than that, I really think the first one is great.

TXS, In the first shot the man is looking straight into a softbox. Lets say 2 feet away. Hence the very strong catch light. And yes you have a point.

TXS for the extra effort. The picture looks ok, but as you say the lights and shadows will create an extra dimension. I do believe that B@W is possible the best option for LK.
