New gear may be in my future...

Okay so here's my setup. Canon 20D and an EF-S 17-85mm f/4-5.6 IS. I'm coming to a point where I should start thinking about adding gear to my lineup.

So here's what I like about what I've got. I'm digging the wide angle, I find that I tend to shoot more wide angle stuff than I did when I had my Oly C-750UZ last year. That said, there are certainly times when I wish I had more than 136mm equivalent on the long side.

I of course like the 20D. I'm a little frustrated by the APS-C sensor. Full frame would be nice but I'd have to have the body and the lens since I've only got an EF-S. The 5D is what, $3200 plus a lens to go with it would be a smidge over budget. So I'm thinking that maybe I would start with a lens that will work on more than the 20D. Maybe one day I can have the dreamy three setup: 16-35L, 24-70L, and 70-200L 2.8 IS (and 1ds mk2 or whatever. hey, one can dream). On the other hand, maybe those lenses aren't all that great and I should be going in a different direction. Any help here?

On the other hand, I'm also getting frustrated with the crappy onboard flash. I'm not sure how much more flash work I would do if I had a 580EX. Would that be worth the investment or should I focus on the lenses first?

Of course then there is also the post-processing (and graphic design for me) realm. I'm considering a wacom intuos 3 tablet. Anyone used one of those? Does it really help that much?

Hmmm or I could go for a studio lighting package of some kind.

Decisions decisions.

Well, you don't mention a budget. I would bet that the cheapy Wacom would be fine.

The flash would make a big difference. I have the 420EX (it cost me a dinner for a friend is why I have it) and really wish I had the 580. I think the Lightsphere II is an essential add-on for the flash. It's a great diffuser.

The 10-22 EFS is a lot of fun, I love shooting with that lens...

The 70-200 f4L is a great lens and a great value, you lose a stop and the IS, but it's lighter and much cheaper than the 2.8IS, and it'll keep most of its value, so you can always upgrade later if you feel the need.

And the 17-40 f4L is great, too. Again, not as fast as the 16-35, but that's what high ISO is for, right? Especially on a budget...

Anyway, I have those lenses and I love them all. I know nothing about the Tamrons, Sigmas, etc.

As much as I would love to have the 5D, I'd rather have the 20D with a set-up like that than the 5D with only a kit lens...

    The 580EX is a joy.

It's fun to learn with it also. And there will be lots of learning:D

The 10-22 really does shine even if it is an EFS. The quality is superb.

The big money lens for me was the 70-200 2.8 IS L. It's my most used lens and is awesome. It still amazes me how great this thing is for a zoom.

While many say the 24-70 L is over priced, I'm really starting to enoy it. Here's a few with it and the 580EX. I'll stop here before you go broke.:D
