scanning slides

Not sure if this is the right forum.

I've decided to pay to have a bunch of old slides scanned. I am concerned about the quality of the scan, but I am not interested in having the scanning company clean the images up--I want to do that myself. Any recommendations? I have seen several recommendations for Scan Cafe, which seems tobe one of the cheapest, but they normally edit the scans.

Many thanks.

Scancafe has a Pro scanning option that gives you an uncompressed TIFF of the raw scan.

Thanks. very helpful suggestion. I have written them for a few more details than they have on the web about this.

this might be a dumb question , but thats what i am

why you dont want to do it your self ?

average scanners are not expensive ( at least over here )

    It's a huge time-sucking PITA, IMO.

Right, time and the PITA. I would much rather spend my time editing the digital images than hunched over a scanner. Re digmypics: thanks.

The caveat being, that if the scan is poor (dust, scratches, focus issues, newton rings etc) - you will be spending a lot more time in front of the computer! Which is why getting a good reference from other folk that have used a particular supplier can be critical.
