Challenge 50 - Natures Colors

The judges are going to have a hard time with this challenge. Everything I see is amazingly good. I was in Santa Fe over the weekend and took these photos for the challenge. The flaming cottonwoods were magnificent.

    As for me, second shot definitely has the potential.
    I'd add some blue to the sky and dark heavy yellow/orange to the grass.
    Curves, Hue/Saturation.

    I like the colors in No. 1, but I think the trees are more about nature. I like the composition of No. 2 with the one tree. I'd work on punching up the colors in that one.

    The first Tree ..
    ... is the one I like, has more impact. And I have a silly question - is a Cottonwood a birch or a maple or alder or something? Or is it its own thing - just a cottonwood. I should be less lazy and look it up in a trees book - just wondered.
