Every once in a while in LR3 I get this message asking me to "Import settings from Disk" or if I should "overwrite Settings"
"The metadata for this photo has been changed by both Lightroom and another application. Should Lightroom import settings from disk or overwrite disk settings with those from the catalog?"
can anyone explain this?
BTW, the only 2 apps I use are LR3 and CS5 with OnONe and NiK plugins.

explain
Lightroom write its changes into a separate file file [ XMP file ]
other applications write those changes into the image file itself [ usually TIFF file ]
now if you edit this TIFF in LR , LR will get dizzy , and ask you which of the 2 to use
just ignore it , doesnt matter much , and it cannot be undone if it turns out wrong

A) Older galleries that used Lightroom 2 for processing ... "and"
Using "sidecar" files (XMP).
In other words, the first time you open a gallery that was previously processed in LR2, LR3 will issue those notifications if there are (version 2) XMP files for the image files. It's the software's method of asking if it's OK to update the sidecar files to LR3 standards.
Does that match your situation?
Edit: Like Bas said.

I convert to DNG files so I don't have an XMP file and as far as I remember all images were originally with LR3. I think I figured it out. I think I have to overwrite the setting so what was done in LR is maintained.
Still trying to learn what changes are made exactly with both options.
LR write different data then other app's
sometimes these different data can conflict
