Framing art

Ive been looking through ways to package my fine art prints. My lab offered me a service. They will print my image, mount it on a thin board, and spray it with a luster coating. They will then frame the image for hanging. The only thing is, there is no glass included. Does an art print mounted on a board need glass in the frame?

    Nope. Doesn't need glass.

I've got 4 pictures that are currently in a show. All are dry mounted and framed with no glass.
They are all luster finish and are frequently mistaken for paintings.

    Go for it.

While there are many ways to mount and display images I personally don't find this method very appealing for fine art prints.

There are two reasons for a more traditional framing method. The mat will keep the print from touching the glass or having the frame edge touch rub the print. The mat will also direct the eye and surround the print with a neutral or complimentary color to allow you to focus on the image. The glass of course is to protect the image.

Now if you wanted to mount the image in an alternative way you could look into standouts, gator board, sintra etc. I just had a 24" X 36" image printed by Bay Photo mounted on gator board with a lament protector sheet applied. It also has a mounting bar attached to the back which keeps the print about one inch off the wall.

This is a different more modern look, but can be very appealing for certain environments.

Here are two quick and dirty photos. In the first photo the image on the right is 16" X 24" and mounted on foam core. NEVER mount an image on foam core for a client! It will warp over time. The main image is 24" X 36".

This second image is just to give you a little better look.

I might not have clear. The image from Bay with the gator board mount is absolutely OK to sell to clients.
