Looks to me like you have the benefit of some pretty solid rink lighting .... which isn't always present. Consider that a gift. What's your glass/exposures?

(or, alternately, this is one of my better ones from the local <del>pit</del> arena - can't recall the data, but it's ISO 3,200 for sure by the damned grain, probably wide open at f2.8. Shot with a Canon D30, jpeg, and *STILL* underexposed.)

I'm lucky if I can pull 1/250th out of that place. Egad.

All the pics were 1/400 @ ISO3200 F3.1 - F3.3 (I use a 50-200mmSWD F2.8-3.5) on my new Olympus E-5. It's considered less than ideal by some for action/sports but it gets the job done.

The lighting isn't the best but I've shot in a lot darker this past year. The good thing is that the WB and coverage is very even on this specific sheet of ice.

The local hockey rink is my albatross. I've shot hockey at almost every level imaginable, from novice D to minor pro, and this rink ... Oi, vey. :bash

My next attempt to obtain something that meets my standards will, I think, be a remote ETTL flash off a long cable, with the flash mounted on a stand sufficient distance as not to be a bother, then stop down to 1600 ISO and see what gives.

Your rig seems to be doing JUUUUUST fine. 1/400 is ideal for hockey. Do you try other sports, perchance?

Well, I have attempted Cheer and Lacrosse this past year.

Lacrosse: My son is the center middy checking the ball from the player in blue...

Thanks April! Your work was one of my early inspirations from this board so it means a lot...
