Dusted off studio lights....and outdoors

Only brought out my monolights a couple times in last 4 or 5 years, but dusting them off and going to work on it again. I have a couple 600ws lights, and ample small strobes on slaves. One large softbox, a couple umbrellas and away we go.

Our twirler from the HS band wanted some head shots to enter a pageant. I had her come over for the studio look and also went out in backyard since we had a nice high overcast bright day.

First, indoors in my studio (AKA living room)

...and outdoors

Spend two hours setting up lights and getting ready, and 10 minutes outside with a speedlight fill flash set to -1. When nature cooperates, I enjoy outdoor shots.

Need to spend time playing with lights again and getting familiar.

Suggestions always welcome.....

I would like to see her relax with a more natural smile.
Did you get any shots without a smile.

I like the skin tones & eyes in #2 the best.

    +1

I've just been watching "lighting in layers" by the strobist and he makes a point to engage the model with conversation to lighten the mood and "provoke" a look that works. The smile on this girl looks very tense and nervous.

    non smile
Thanks for the feedback. She actually has a bit of an underbite that is very cute in person. I did do a non-smiling contemplative shot or two.

And maybe a bit more natural. She is always a bit shy even though I have taken pictures of her for a couple years in band now.

    Thanks again for the comments!

I have a friend with an underbite like that, she has the same look when she smiles. If you know the person, it's pretty adorable, but without knowing them it's like "Aren't you having fun!...." haha

I am drawn more to the indoor shot you posted first for a couple of reasons. I like the skin tone a little more and her pupils are larger which I personally think gives a more pleasing appearance to the eyes. I think, for this particular young woman, a closed mouth smile is more flattering, because the thinness of her upper lip does not stand out so much. I do prefer the tighter crop of the outdoor shots though.
