I'm looking at his little cart which almost seems empty but for a small bag and the way both he and the cashier are looking as he swipes his credit card....
This one strikes a nerve with me for sure.
I think also that it really works well with your title, I can imagine he is shopping for a Christmas present and he has to charge it. However once I get past the emotional part for me, I note nothing that really says Christmas or holiday, just Big lots.
My take is that he is trying to figure out the swiping of the card versus distress at the amount versus the quantity of purchase.
I like the line of people going from R to L in the frame. However, the rack of gift cards and merchandise to the right of the cashier distracts from the rest.
