I'm a novice, and I want to download a free, easy-to-use editing program that will let me darken out a portion of unwanted background in a group picture. What's the best program to let me do that, without spending a lot of time learning how?

You can also look here: http://graphicssoft.about.com/od/pixelbasedwin/tp/freephotoedw.htm.

Not every editor on the list has local adjustments, but many will, and they all cost nothing except hard drive space.

It would help if you posted an image. Darkening part of a background (without touching the subjects) could range from very easy to very difficult. In any case, Gimp is free, but it is not easy to use.
