I have a set of categories that I'd like to sort alpha-numerically. What is the best way to do this? (I am oara.smugmug)

Sort the underlying galleries to control category order

See this thread for a similar question I asked on how to arrange categories on your home page. The answer I was given is that if you sort the galleries in the order you want their categories to appear and set the category order to a manual order, that will control the category sort order. I don't think there is any facility to sort categories by alpha-numeric name.

just to tack on here, to make sure nothing's changed.

Is there not a way to order categories (on the front page) differently from the way the galleries are sorted inside the categories?

(I'd like to manually position the categories on the front page, but within the categories have galleries show in most-recently-updated order)

There is no way, you are correct... basically, the order of the galleries dictates the order of categories and sub categories and then finally the order of the galleries within. It is a pain. Also, when sorting by position, you have to sort ALL your galleries at once (not just the ones in the category you are working on), and then you have to rely on the gallery title (because that is all you will see), and hope that when you look at your home page, you will like what you see. Apparently I am the only one that thinks this is a pain, but now I have company.

smugmug is great, has cool customization features (which I don't use), and they seem to be very sympathetic to peoples requests.... but to me, this is "organization 101" Why not have a Category Sort order, then Categories need attributes so you can set the Gallery order within it. I can come up with good ideas all day to satisfy the basic shortcomings, but I see too much attention being paid to more advanced stuff without addressing these basic things first.

I have 102 galleries at the moment, in about 6 categories and a couple with sub-categories. sorting by position is giving me a headache. Smugmug can sort all my galleries by "Date Created" which would help, but I can't use "Date Created" cause I just created them all and the photos date back to 1999. I asked for a modification to add the "Date Created" to the gallery customization screen, so I can enter a useable date. But I was told, that nobody else has asked for this, so it may be a while.

I may seem like a complainer, but I actually love this site. I used photopoint, clubphoto, shutterfly, imagestation, flicker, then found smugmug... ughh, I want to help, but I am hyper and need quicker satisfaction I guess...1drink.gif
