Down the Devil's Hole
Devil's Hole is a state park near Niagara Falls, and includes part of the Niagara Gorge. At one point a trolley or train ran through the gorge, but frequent rockslides eventually put it out of business. Steps (in various states of disrepair) run from the top of the gorge to the bottom, (it's about 300' vertical difference) and the park is open year round. My wife and I went on an unseasonably warm afternoon in late November.
All taken with Pentax K5 and 15mm f/4 lens.
1. Overlook of the Niagara Gorge and the power station.
2. Just a few feet from the top. I can see why rockslides are a problem.
3. Looking across the way. It appears that Dave was there at some point.
5. The paths and steps,as mentioned, were in various stages of disrepair. Not quite treacherous, but you did have to keep an eye on where you were stepping.
6.
7. Looking back at how far we had come.
8. The college kids (Niagara University) apparently like to "hang out" around the gorge when school is in session. Luckily for us, it was Thanksgiving break.
9. But We still have a ways to go.
10. Another look back.
11. A side path gives another view of the power station.
12. Almost to the end, huzzah!
13. I didn't care much for this pic, but my wife likes it.
14. Apparently, if you hike this way about 2-3 miles, you end up at Whirlpool park.
15. But you are not to head this way (toward the power station)
Then there's the story of how (and why) we had to head back up, but I'll save it for a bit later. :wink

At the base of the gorge:
1.
2. My wife mentions that she may, maybe, could possibly need to use "the facilities." Problem is, "the facilities" are 300 feet above us. So we start back up.
3. ... and up.
4. And up!
5. I asked her how she was doing during a quick break from our exertions.
6. Almost to the top!
7. And to the restroom, at last! Wait, what's that sign on the door?
To be continued?
