Making the save

I took this picture last May when the NL Blizzard Dogs were here for a hockey tournament. I figure this was the best shot I took all weekend. The puck is at the heel of the stick. Comments are welcome.

Good capture, but it's about a stop under-exposed. I'm guessing you had your lens wide open, so your only choice would have been to shoot at 1/160 and you probably would have induced both shake and blur. Only solution - faster glass.

Thanks Icebear. This picture was part of my first shoot covering my nephew's hockey tournament. It was set on automatic for sports. I am using a Canon Rebel T2i and the lowest f stop I can get it to is about 4. My niece plays ringette on the weekend so I will be experimenting with some manual settings.

I wouldn't be surprised if f/5.6 is as wide as your lens will go at 250mm. I don't know what lens you were using, but I'm guessing you were shooting with a zoom, and it's labled somethink like f/4-5.6. That means that at the shortest focal length it's an f/4 lens, but as you zoom it rather quickly becomes an f/5.6. Whatever your max aperture is, that's what you need to shoot at for indoor sports.

Exif shows 1/320 @ 5.6, ISO of 3200 and 250mm. Great capture for automatic and those settings.

Only nit is having the top of his head chopped off. Otherwise a good job using a lens that really isn't suited for the task!
