I like the color version better. The composition is good as is the rapt attention of the kid in the foreground. The problems in the image are due to the difficult light. You might try reworking it a bit following Ben's advice. First, try to brighten up the face of the woman so that it is almost as bright as the kids' faces. Then try to improve the contrast so that all three stand out from the background a bit more. A little bit of overall brightening would probably also help as would a correction of the blue cast, perhaps selectively on the kids and woman.
I'd agree with Richard, but it's going to be really difficult to re-work that woman's face in a believable way. I'm not saying it can't be done, but look at the kids' faces. There's a range of brightnesses there from overhead lights. The woman's out of the range of those lights. In any case, good luck trying, Doob.
I've seen images like this before and yes, I too prefer the color image.
Richard makes a good point on the darkness aspects. But in some respects, is the focus on the people in the dark or the two kids with the wavy light on their heads?

Some how I don't feel it though. It could be the lack of dramatic light on any but the
one boy in front.
If it was mine I would work on selective brightness on the faces, but I sure would not "Cull" it
