1. Does the viewfinder brightness depend solely on the max aperture of the lens?

2. Will using a lens designed for full frame cameras that has less brightness and corner sharpness perform "better" on the 20D/Rebel since the imaging circle is smaller?

more so, it's the size of the viewfinder. 1.5x and 1.6x bodies have smaller viewfinders than ff cameras. some find them dimmer to work with, others don't have an issue. it's a function of your eyesight, too. the lens is wide open when you are composing, looking thru the viewfinder, it stops down at time of exposure. so yeah, an f/1.8 lens will brighter than an f/5.6 lens....

so yeah, a 16-35L for example will perform better in the corners/edges on a 1.6x body than on a ff body.
