Had the camera with me today, and I made my way to the top floor of the multi-storey car park at the Golden Square in Warrington which gave me a decent view of the distant coal-powered power station, which is 4 miles WSW of Warrington.

Not being a strong point of mine (landscapes, as I nearly always shoot macro) I'd be interested in what you guys reckon to this one...

Taken with the standard 18-55 IS kits lens on my 550D.

I do like your composition. It has good atmosphere with the clouds and steam and very nice color. A couple of things come to mind: The foreground buildings are in what I call a Limbo exposure, they are too underexposed and leave the viewer trying to see the detail of the buildings which we know is there and on the other hand it is not underexposed enough to show the buildings in silhouette which could also be interesting. At this stage you could try both. The sun is a bit bright but probably nothing can be done with it as it looks pure white. just my humble opinion.

Reminds me a bit of a painting by Constantin Meunier of the Black Country! Think I would agree with Doug about the foreground. I would probably go for the silhouette option, but you might end up with too much black at the bottom. I wonder how it would look mirrored...the photo reads left to right which is uncomfortable for western readers(perfectly natural for some eastern cultures though). By the way, I just took a quick gander through your macro gallery and there are some truly wonderful images in there. I'm only starting to explore that avenue myself.

Thank you Colin for your thoughts.

Glad you like the gallery too. I love close-up work, though I'm a long way behind some!

Hi Paul, I like the composition. I would do as previously suggested and lift the foreground shadows a bit. The sky color and industrial setting are very cool.

Nice composition. I agree with prior comment re.limbo exposure on the foreground. True silhouette on the foreground may be more effective.
