I've read about color gurus drooling and raving about the performance of LCD monitors backlit with white LEDs, and now one is on the market...

Yikes! That does look sweet though.

At almost $7K, I will wait until the costs go way down before I trade all I own for that fine piece of tech. Sony is also working on something similar with individual white LED backlit pixels for a 2000:1 contrast ratio and pure white color.

The cost should come down rather rapidly. Lack of manufacturing plants and the process is what jacks them up. LED has a huge advantage over lcd in failure in manufacturing. That's one of the reason LCDs were so expensive for so long. They improved, but the failure rate is still too high. Once they equip more plants to make these, the price will plummet.

Also, LED is the wave of the future, it's cheap, lasts forever, and only flourescent lighting is more economical. Many traffic lights now use them, and you will evenually see them replacing the incandescent light bulb.

I thought the next big thing was going to be OLED's. What happened to them?

They can't figure out a cheap way to mass produce them.

Last time I read about them, OLEDs didn't have good longevity yet. The blue goes first, they say. You won't notice a color balance shift over time on your car stereo OLED, so they are used there and on cell phones, but it looks like the color stability problems don't make OLED a good candidate for checking your latest shoot's white balance (yet). LEDs, on the other hand are exceedingly stable and long-lasting. We just need them to make a few hundred million of those monitors so I can get one for $500...
