Upgrading question

Currently I shoot with a Nikon D3100 and I am looking to upgrade my camera before football season next August. I take photographs for USF's school newspaper and I have been doing more sports games than anything. The options I've been coming up with are:

1) Hope the price of the D700 drops to around $2200 once the D800 comes out and pick up a D700 and get a grip with it

2) Wait for the release of the D400 and get it with a grip

3) Don't up grade my body and get Nikon's 24-70 2.8 and a speed light

I've been leaning towards the D700 route but the only thing keeping me back it the price...

American football photography also works best with a sports-grade lens, or two. What do you currently have for lenses?

    I have available to me Nikon's 70-200 2.8 VR1

The reason why I want the 24-70, is because of some of the indoor sports that I shoot as well

    which indoor sports??

I would think basketball and volleyball the 70-200 would be best suited... any way that is mostly what I see at the college level here.

I use the 70-200 and my 50 1.8 for basketball, but I thought the 24-70 would be better for volleyball when using a DX camera

    Used D700's are under $2,000 already, I paid $1900 for mine. :-)
