Star Filters

I've been looking at star filters. I see there are different brands which leads me to believe some are better then others. Which one is optically good vs not good. I always worry when I add a filter to my lenses and getting a softer look. Will the photo itself stay sharp with one of these filters?

Also too .. what happens to other lights in the photo like reflections off water or windows?

I very much prefer to add star effects in post-processing. Yes, most star filters do soften the image. Post-processed stars are positioned where you want and they can be any size that you want. The amount of control is just much greater using the software approach.

I thought there might be a softening effect with the filter, but just wasn't sure. Saved me some money

Thanks for the 'how to'. I've never used the brush pallet before so this will be a learning experience for me ... that I like
