ND filters

Hi team, I have bought a set of nd filters and been playing with them. Occasionally I am getting a smoky cast to the pic, greying everything out, but other times perfect. What should I be looking at to sort this out?

    It's hard to say, without looking at some samples of the problem.

    What ND filters, specifically, and what conditions and camera settings?
