It amazed me how Mary Celeste could communicate with nothing but her eyes.

Is she talking to you and, if so, what is she saying??

    Are these sharp at your end, John? On my monitor, the eyes look reaalllly soft. Add to that there's no catch light in them and they're dark, I'm not getting anything from them ne_nau.gif

    If they're sharp, do some dodging, burning, and white-swooshing (a la Hackbone) to put some life and sparkle into them thumb.gif

    Looking at them, they are a bit soft. Probably comes from my misuse of the 50mm f1.4 although these are all at F4.0

    There's no flash so that may explain the lack of catchlights.

    Ditto on the catch lights. That's where the eyes speak from. I think the sq crop kills the image.

    Really?? on the square crop Hack? That surprises me.

    I don't usually add false catchlights but it may be worth doing here.

    Your angle seems too high. Best to get in the water with them and shoot at eye level. With your permission I'll post one of mine tomorrow if you like.

    Wow, I really liked the first one.

    The lack of catchlights isn't a problem (IMO) but the darkened eye sockets are. It might have worked in a low key image, with how bright everything else is it looks a little raccoonish.

    Catchlights comment makes sense. And I can tell in at least two that she's not smiling ....

    John, exposed for the pool light. As you can see the sun is doing some type of butterfly of modified loop. Flash on camera to open up the dark eye sockets and provide a catch light. Brought the flash on camera up to where I liked the results. Most of the time the flash never leaves the camera even outside. Only time when using off camera flash. Camera was on the deck to get down as low as I could without getting in the pool, didn't want to get the lip of the pool in if I got lower. Vignette some to darken the blues and some eye work on the first one.

    Thanks Demian. Sun was bright overhead and I was as far in the pool as I could get without ruining a second camera on this trip.

    Pictures, if you can tell that then she did her job.

    Hack, those are really nice but I don't think your POV is any lower than mine was. I also wanted nothing but eyes.
    I was actually in the pool as low as I could get (and damn nervous after my swim in the Gulf the day before). On the other hand, your flash fill is WAYYY superior to my natural light.
