I'm new here and considering a trial membership . How do I make a category, that has subordinate galleries . i.e. Italy with subordinate galleries of Rome, amalfi and Tuscany. I am tearing my hair out trying to figure this clunky interface out.

You have 3 levels of organization available - categories, subcategories, and galleries.

Categories contain galleries and optionally subcategories
    Subcategories contain galleries
    Galleries contain photos

It sounds like you need to set up some subcategories.

I still don't get it. It's way too clunky for me. Simply said I want to have a folder entitled Italy with 3 subfolders under it entitled Rome, amalfi, & Tuscany. What is the step by step process. I think I will go to shutterfly or Picasa.

If you have multiple galleries in each of the locations:
    • Create a category called Italy.
    • Create subcategories in the Italy category for Rome, Amalfi, and Tuscany.
    • Create galleries in Italy > Rome that contain photos from Rome.
    • Repeat for Amalfi and Tuscany.

If you have a single gallery in each location:
    • Create a category called Italy.
    • Create 3 galleries, one for Rome, one for Amalfi, one for Tuscany.
    • Load the photos in to the appropriate gallery.

I really appreciate the help. I went and created a category called Italy 2010 and tried to put galleries in it to no avail. I ended up with a category of Travel with with the 3 sub catagories which is halfway what I want. I want to rename Travel to Italy 2010 . i belong to a very large Photo club and quite a few members have encountered difficulties with Smugmug and tell me I'm wasting my time. I would like to make this work but the "control Panel" is a bitch.

You can't rename the standard categories, and Travel is a standard category.

You can create your own category called Italy. Then you can move the galleries to the new category. The galleries are "moved" by opening up the gallery settings and selecting the new category and selecting a subcategory as needed.

You are making something simple seem so very hard! I don't think you can blame smugmug for this. The interface of categories and sub-categories is pretty simple, and a little bit of reading of the help files, or following Denise's simple instructions would have your issues solved. Sounds more like you simply want to bitch about smugmug.

    1. Create a Category ('folder') called Italy
    2. Create 3 sub-categories ('sub-fodlers') under the Italy Category - Rone, Tuscany, Amalfi
    3. Select the gallery you want to upload the folders to, and click the upload button.

Good luck with Picasa - no categories at all there... just single Albums ('folders')

I really appreciate the help. Over the weekend the web site elves helped me out and all is well. Now if I can make my site as purdy as yours is I will be content. Again thanks for the help.

Read through the customization topic threads - I didn't know the first thing about CSS codes, or Java script, but with the help of others on the forum, I figured out how to make my site look the way I wanted it. And let me say, Denise is one of the most knowledgeable, and friendliest, of folks here on DGrin! I've learned a ton from her.
