SmugMug w/ Lightroom 3 - Upload speeds with "Publish"

I've been using Smugmug with the Lightroom plugin for almost a year now and don't really have any complaints. But...
The upload speed when I "publish" seems pretty slow. I've usually only uploaded <100 photos at a time so it hasn't been a big deal. Now I am working on a new project and I will be uploading 1,000's of pictures at a time. So now optimizing the speed will become a priority. I will be upgrading to a faster internet connect, so I am addressing that bottleneck. Now to my real question for this thread...
When you create a gallery in Lightroom and "Publish" to smugmug, is that any slower than going into smugmug and "uploading" files from the same folder on your computer? I mean...are there any other processing steps that slow down the transfer?
And to clarify...I'm talking about transfer speeds, not number of mouse clicks. Obviously the "Publish" feature is probably the quickest in terms of user interaction.
*I would be uploading .jpg images. So LR would NOT be crunching RAW files as part of the publish process.
Thanks!

Perhaps try setting Format to 'Original' in the File Settings on the Publish Manager dialog. If it's set to 'JPEG', the export process always includes a step of rewriting the file to disk in a temporary location according to File Settings and Image Sizing parameters such as quality.
