I am new to photography and have just purchased a D-200. With the pockets not being the deepest, what would be a good lense for outdoor shots (landscape, wildlife etc.) I would prefer to stay with Nikon to utilize all available features but........

Greetings and welcome to DGRIN Treyyen.

I would suggest the 18-70 Nikon Kit lens. One of Nikons better cheap lenses. A good general walk-around lens for those without deep pockets.

Thanks Seymour. I noticed that there are several different Nikon lenses in this spec....now the research starts to balance want vs dollars :D

But there is only one kit lens that is 18-70. Not a high end lens and should be available, used, in the $150-250.

Looks like it's no longer available new, B&H lists it as DISCONTINUED.

the 18-70 Nikkor is pretty much useless for wildlife... I would seriously look at the 18-200 nikkor or the 18-200 / 270 by Sigma or Tamron. I have never had a bad lens from Sigma and Have been using them for over 30yrs...
If you really have to stay with Nikon, then take a look into the 55-200 (199.95 / 399.95) / 70- 300 (172.95 - 589.95) the lest expensive do not have VR (vibration control), so a decent tripod will be needed. Prices range new from ... the prices quoted are Nikon LIST prices....prices can vary from store to store ... but my suggestion is also to look for used from a reputable dealer or ebay... so that you have some type BUYERS protection ...

Thanks for the info. I don't really have to stay with Nikon, just would like to so I would have access to all features between body and lens. I have a Tonica 70 - 210mm and a sigma 28 - 80mm right now. been experimenting with the Tonica with an eye to the near future. Not a bad lens to start with, but then again at this point I am a blank canvass and know nothing yet. :):
