I stumbled upon this link at BYU:

The concept was simple; shoot the members of BYU Gymnastics Team in front of a black background with rim lighting. The kicker is that the DP used water to accent the scene.
The Eye-Fi cards allowed the iPads, used for image review, to remain safely out of harm's way.
Rather than describe any more of the scene, it's easier to show the results:

I believe that the separate images were both composited and Photoshop-ed, meaning that additional digital "blending" was done to make the individual image transitions appear contiguous.
