I find the problem with shooting flowers at an exhibition is the lack of control you have over the environment. There are often things in the background, or lighting problems, which if you were shooting 'in nature' or in a studio you could avoid. The only time it works for me is where you have a display of flowers as a group and have the whole frame covered, like this one I took at a show http://www.flickr.com/photos/carregwenimages/6784473540/

I think your first shot works best for that reason.
