Opinion on B&W Processing

I made some changes from the way I normally process B&W to try and bring out some more details and increase contrast and tonality. I have included the color version so that you can see where it came from.

B&W Version - I tried to bring out as much detail in the sky as I could, hopefully not overdone.

and here is the color version

C&C appreciated.

Wow, Tom. That's amazing how much detail you coaxed out of the sky in your conversion. Nice! thumb.gif

Thanks, Joel. I wasn't sure if it was too much. There is a balancing act in the sky to bring up the details without getting a lot of noise.

Tom, here's my 2 cents: I like the left side of the sky and the top, but the center does look a tad overdone to me. I think it's because the foreground rocks are noticeably smoother than the sky. Overall, though, I like your new process. Let's see some more!

This really works for me Tom, i'm not sure if i need to tone down the noise level but i think the overall process is really good.

I'll look at it again. I tend to put fair amounts of contrast in as part of my workflow so I have to restrain myself sometimes not to overdo it.

doing this in LR? I like how your sky & water turned out.
didnt like what happened to the rocks, they look like they lost all texture & brightnessnessness.....
I mean detail, they lost detail....

Hey slacker, good to have you back.

A lot of this was done in Lightroom to start. Did some contrast enhancements over in Photoshop afterward, but a lot of the sky came out of Lightroom. Played with HSL sliders to bring out the details in the sky.

I agree the rocks probably need some work but I was trying for the sky.

So here is a rework. Contrast into the works along with local adjustments. And I really like Lightroom 4!!
