I have finally gotten around to adding some keywords to my site. I read on the dgrin forums a how to, I went to control panel>>customize>>Search Engine Settings & Optimization. I followed the advice and entered info in Homepage Meta Keywords. Now my nav bar is GONE! what do i need to do to get it back???

We can only help you if you include a link to your site in your post. It's best if you put that link in your dgrin signature so it's automatically in every post.

What kind of navbar did you have? Was it done in the Easy Customizer? If so, did you check there to see if you just need to turn it back on?

No sir, it was a custom bar, hours and hours over several days formatting that thing. I see that all of my code on the advanced customized page is GONE. I have an old, very old back up of that code, but it is going to take a lot of work to put it back right. Is there anywhere that backups are kept? I didn't fool with the code, I only added keywords as the tutorial in dgrin listed. WHAT HAPPENED?

    Hi

I'm afraid that there isn't a way to retrieve the nav bar unless you have a back up of your customization. However, we would be happy to have one of our customizing heroes work with you and get it rebuilt. I'll make sure one of them gets in touch with you.

    ***sigh*** 2 questions then

    1) any idea what happened that would wipe all of my customization? I was reading somewhere in here about how when I post to facebook the smugmug ad is listed instead of just my site. It said I needed information in my Homepage Meta Keywords. Since we were actually searching for SEO at the time and I had nothing in my Homepage Meta Keywords, I added stuff. That is the only thing I can see that would have wiped out my customizations.

    2) should I start my complete site rebuild over in customization?

Ann, with the amount of storage you guys use, it would be a trivial amount of storage to keep a few days or revisions of backups of people's customizations automatically so when disaster strikes, there's a recovery mechanism. Perhaps you can relay this to the folks who consider/prioritize stuff like this. It seems like it would be a very customer-friendly thing to do and nice disaster protection for Smug to have.

Yes, people are supposed to request a backup of their own data, but you know how well manual backups work - they only get done every once in a while and never right before one is needed. Automatic backups are massively more useful and fault tolerant.

Had I known that what I was doing was messing with the site build, I would have copied everything before I did anything. I thought all I was doing was adding search engine non-viewable junk. But yeah, even a yesterday only rescue would be a big help.

Thanks Allen, I have that code and it went through a major over-haul about a year ago when my links stopped working. I will take this over to customization. Still...it would be nice to know why all of my code was wiped and I mean every bit of it.
