International characters not showing in Google search results

A lot has been fixed in regard to international characters, but this problem still remains. :)

My bio is written in Finnish here: http://scala.smugmug.com. Google search results for it here: http://www.google.fi/search?q=haluatko+malliksi+majakorpi show some of the a-umlaut (ä) characters, but not all. The ones that do show correctly are written as HTML entities (ä). The ones that are completely missing are written directly as ä.

The actual missing characters are in the word "täältä" which shows up on Google as "t t ".

Any idea what is wrong and how to fix this?

Thanks!

Hm, this sounds like more of a google problem than a smugmug problem :D

But again, we never claimed that the language problem was 100% fixed - we are still working on improvements here and there. I find it odd though that google does not pick up 100% of the time on the same exact character. ne_nau.gif

True. On other search services (MSN, Yahoo) the characters do show up correctly. But Google is quite important.

My guess on what's causing this is the issue with the http header content type returned by your server as iso-8859-1 and the html meta tag indicating UTF-8. If I load up http://scala.smugmug.com with InertNet Exploder (IE6) and change encoding type to UTF-8, the same characters that Google does not show end up showing as squares.

It may be that Google expects adherence to certain declared standards :)

    Any thoughts?

    Thanks!

Again - it really sounds like a google problem. But the content-type was already changed on our testing servers, so we will see what happens as soon as it goes out.

What's happened to the UTF-8 encoding? The content-type is still isoxxx.

    Sebastian

PS: I checked the <meta>-tag of scala's and my site.

EDIT: Over here is someone interested in smugmug and I thought this was fixed, but apparently not yet.
