My first thought was that these were drops of oil in water, but on closer inspection I don't think that's the case. However you did it, the result is attractive.

You're exactly right. Oil and water in a (somewhat clear) glass dish, all positioned above a CD with side lighting.

I'd seen this technique several times but had never tried it. Pretty cool!

I concluded that it wasn't oil and water because the positioning of the spheres appeared to be too calculated and precise. Shows what I know.
