Moonset Sunrise Transition Light

I decided to go out and experiment with a setting full Moon yesterday in the pre-dawn hours. Moonset was at 5:42 a.m. with sunrise at 6:29 a.m. So there were still some stars out. But the sky wasn't fully dark either. I was pretty surprised with how much light the moon provided even as it was setting. Like a sunset it was more golden light as it approached the horizon.

Thanks guys, it was quite interesting lighting with the mixture a pre-dawn and setting moonlight. I picked Wednesday for that reason since I was curious what a setting full moon would do. Although the Milky Way wasn't as bright as shots I had taken a few weeks earlier with no moon I was glad it was still faintly visible.

The second shot was a school bus that just happened to pass by, hence the higher lighting along the bridge. I think I'll call it 'Time for School' mwink.gif

Awesome work, Derek. Number two is excellent, but the light in #1 is really great as well.

Both are great, but #2 steals the show.

How do you get the stars? Haven't made the attempt myself. Tracking Pod or does a regular tripod cut it?

Mike, you just need to shoot a long exposure under 30 seconds. Most of my night shots are ~ 30 seconds at higher ISOs (2500-4000). With these I could get away with less of both because of the available transition light. I never use a tracking device, just a basic steady tripod with a wide angle lens.

    Nicely done.

I've never been to Bixby Creek where it hasn't been fogged in..

Thanks guys. Larry, let me guess. You usually visit during the Summer months right? Most of the year there is very little fog. We have a normal Winter pattern right now for example with rain storms that come and go, giving way to clear skies. But the fog gets very thick in the Summer months.

Great shots. I would seem that the 2nd shot would have been much more than a 30 sec exposure.

Chester, these are actually under 30 seconds. The first is 20 sec. and the second 25 sec. The reason it is so well lit is the setting full moon.
