I got my paperwork from the IRS, and my busines stuff from the state. I'm offically a business owner.

    Congrats. What are you going to specialize in?

    Was it hard to set up your own business regarding taxes and such? What can you write off and how much?

    Thanks JohnR, I'm not sure what it is just yet as the business won't offically open till the first of the year. In the process of getting the website done, and a business plan worked out.

    The paperwork wasn't that hard once I had someone sit down and go over it with me. I filled alot of it out online and got a response right then.

    I would have thought you would have gotten the business plan first before doing the IRS stuff....don't you have to show them what your plans are?

    Reason I ask is because I"m tempted to start my own business (wedding and event photography) but I really want to get everything in order before I think about doing it.

    In Jersey, if you are just going to be a sole proprietor, all you need to do is register the name of your business and get a tax number. Really not a whole lot of paper work involved at all. Of course corporations are a whole other ball game but I don't think you would want to incorporate at first.

    No, business plans are for the banks when trying to obtain loans. I do know what I'm planning to do, but as for specializing, I've not settled on one thing just yet.

    Congrats JDS... I'm doing the same. I had a LLC setup already doing software development, however, I do that everyday - all day and I get tired of it. So Photography is my "OUT". I've recently changed the corp name and will be doing more photo work I hope. I was generic and named the company 3rd Planet Services so I can swing in different directions. I'll slowly get my website built and look decent some day. I have the same issue as the car mechanic who drives a broken car.

    And if you don't mind - I have an idea for you...
    Why don't you start a blog of an "amateur going pro"? This will help you to track your day-to-day progress, let the steam out - and it will also help every one of us who's kinda in a same situation to recognize the obstacles and look for the solutions...
    Just a thought...

    Sam, as for the business plan its currently being written by a friend who worked and retired from IBM and then started his own business (bringing in a profit of over 100K the first year) So a plan will be in place when I open Jan 1st 2006.
