Strategy help: LR2 to LR4 and smart galleries

I have ordered my LR4 upgrade and am thinking about how I want to use it. I would appreciate any insights you folks can offer.

CURRENT APPROACH
My LR2 galleries are organized as yyyy/eventname. In SM, my photos are organized by category/eventname. I have only (manually) uploaded a small percentage of my photos and have not done any syncing between LR and SM.

DESIRED APPROACH
I would like to keep my current yyyy/eventname structure when I move to LR4. Ideally, I would like to upload selected photos from each new shoot to the same structure on SM, and then using keywords, have the photos populate smart galleries. For example, say I shoot my grandson's birthday and import into LR 2012/Reed's Birthday. Now, for example suppose I want to publish five of those photos to SM. I would like for them to go to gallery "Reed's Birthday", category "2012". Using Keywords, I would like for all five of the photos to go to a smart gallery called "Reed's 2012 Birthday" in category "Family". Also using keywords, I like for one of the photos to go to a different smart gallery "Favorites" in category "Misc".

Am I correct in my understanding that this can be done? And to complicate matters more, is there any way to make only the smart galleries visible to visitors?

WHAT DO YOU DO?
Perhaps my thinking is not the best way to exploit LR4 publish to SM, and SM's smart galleries. How are you using these features?

thx, jerry

    Hi Jerry,

With our SmugMug publish plugin, you can only publish selected photos, sure. You just select the photos you want to upload and then drag them to the appropriate gallery in the SmugMug publish service.

The smart gallery feature of SmugMug isn't available via Lightroom. You would have to set the smart gallery rules up via the SmugMug gallery settings in your browser. Yes, the source photos could be unlisted. Just keep in mind that smart gallery photos inherit certain settings like pricing and security settings from the original gallery. So you couldn't offer the same set of photos at different prices in different galleries.
You can find additional information on smart galleries here:

Lightroom comes with its own smart gallery feature, but it's Lightroom specific and would simply upload the photos to SmugMug again and not make use of the SmugMug smart gallery feature.
