How to display cropped RAW in SmugMug/Vault?

I use Lightroom 4, SmugMug and SmugVault thanks to Jeffreys excellent plugin.

I wonder if it´s possible to display my RAW files exactly as they show in the develop module with exposure adjustments, cropping and all? The reason for this is that I want to use SmugMug as my number one backup service and I don´t want to export JPGs.

I simply want to display the RAW files but "developed" in the galleries in SmugMug.

RAW files have nothing to display, they are simply data. Lightroom and other image editors that have a RAW processor can interpret this data and show you the render on-screen. Confusingly, an image shows in OS (Windows Explorer, Mac Finder) even though they are not image editors, because the RAW format also includes a JPEG thumbnail that is used to 'show' what the image looks like.

I suppose it would be possible for Smugmug to display the embedded JPEG on a RAW file, but they are quite low resolution and would not look like what you see in Lightroom.

What you are asking is similar to asking to eat a cake BEFORE you put it in the oven.

Thx for your answer. Is there a chance for anyone else to see my adjustments on the RAW file? Eg. what´s in the DNG file for instance? If I download my DNGs to another computer, are the adjustment there for me?

DNG should update the JPEG thumbnail with your latest edits. The DNG does contain your last edit (not history), so programs compatible with DNG will be able to see the RAW and the edit. Of course, back to your earlier question: none of this will be visible on the web.

OK. So with the right programing it would be possible to achieve my needs then? ;-)

All I know is that to get the best answer about Smug Vault you need to be asking the question in the SmugMug Support Forum. thumb.gif

There's no setting for that as far as I know and if you don't get the results you're looking for right now, you could only add it as a suggestion to our feedback pages:
