Geography and Map This has changed?

It appears that the Geography option, along with result when you click "map this" may have recently changed. Or, I'm doing something wrong. Or, I need to set an option someplace.

Up until very recently (last time I created a new gallery, so maybe a month ago), when you brought up the option "geography" for a photo, it took you to a Google map. This gave you the option of looking at either a map, an ariel view of the real topography, or a combined version.

Then when you later clicked on "map this" in the gallery, it would bring up a separate Google map that acted the same (so, view actual photos of the earth, or a map, or a combo).

And, true awesomeness, it would show you the locations of all your other "mapped" galleries and allow you to click on them to go to that gallery. Cool stuff.

However, when I do the geography option, I no longer see the Google map. And, most importantly, cannot bring up the photo of the earth option. I just get a street option against a light blue background. Doesn't really zoom in and out as nicely either.

And, worst, all my other trips are no longer shown.

If I go to any of my galleries, they all seem to be acting the same way.

So, was there a change? Or, am I just doing something wrong? Or, did my advanced age finally catch up to me : )

I guess it could be something in my browser settings. Maybe.

By the way, if this is a permanent change, no big deal. Smugmug will still be my place of choice. But the other "map this" function did seem better to me.

Thanks for any help/info.

New info - so, I went out to the "root" of my web site and clicked on the Map This button located on that page. All my galleries are now showing up with the normal green droplet. So, that's understandable. But, unlike before, there is no small "featured photo" that shows up (I think that used to happen). Also, it's still not Google map. Something called "mapquest"? I still think something has changed : )

New info 2 - (yeah, I'm kinda strange : ) So, if I actually click on the green droplet, the featured photo shows. Also, there is some list of galleries to the right, but not really sure how they tie to the green droplets (ok, if you click on one of the small pictures to the right, it goes to the respective green droplet on the map which works pretty good if the map is zoomed out). Sigh. I must be getting old in my old age : )

Guessing satellite/aerial imagery isn't one of them?

I haven't used the feature much, but the times I have don't really work without the satellite picture. It's one thing if you geotag a city, it's another thing if you geotag a particular spot. Are the upcoming (within the next few years?) improvements going to impress me, or will I react with an "ehh..." ? :D

So - within the borders of the U.S. and as far outside as determined by the size of the photographs (I guess) the coverage is excellent. As for the rest of the world - nothing in the least useful.

I never thought I'd contemplate giving up my subscription but since most of my photos are taken on backpacking trips and are intended to be viewed in a geographic context, I'm beginning to wonder ...

We have a whole list of map feedback from customers, and we will be using all of it. We have heard your ideas and frustrations regarding SmugMaps.

Ok, it's been 6 months since you've heard users feedback, the big reveal of the new site has happened and mapping is a million times worse. I've gone back and forth with support all day today and the conclusion is there is no native support in the new site for the level of mapping integration the old site had.

So what's next? It's pretty useless right now in the new implementation.
