Smugmug print product confusion

In trying to bring some sanity to the pricing for the prints I sell online, I found myself pretty confused by the difference between "Common", "Digital", and "Specialty" prints. The help pages weren't really that much help. In the end, I guessed that it has to do with sizes, but I'm still not sure what the difference is exactly.

Please, can somone fill me in?

A forum search turned up this, this, this, and others. Perhaps one of those threads would be a better place to take up this issue again.

Thanks for the links. I'm not asking for smugmug to make any changes here. I just wanted to simplify my own life by understanding what each of the three categories mean. I guess I'm still confused. Maybe it doesn't matter if I'm confused as long as I can make it so my potential customers aren't by only offering a few different products. At least that was my plan.

Thanks, Mike. After I did my own search and though about it a little it made enough sense to me.

Feel free to delete the thread if you like.

It's always good to have another reference to link to.

    Rutt,

It is kind of confusing especially for our customers. I wish we could put all the offerings into one category (as an option). I personally only select a few items from each of these and it would be great if there were more flexibility in the order of items/print sizes offered. Maybe someday!

    Take care.

I agree, but this has been discussed a lot and I doubt it will change. I've had friends/family who have been confused because they couldn't find the crop ratio's they were familiar with (4x6, 5x7, 8x10)-- the shopping cart defaults to the aspect-ratio which is closest("Prints from small cameras" in my case - Canon G6). Some have even ordered the 4xD, not realizing they even had an option for 4x6, then asking for a CD so they could go to Costco to get 4x6 prints made. After I describe the cart to them, they understand, but it shouldn't require that.. Even still, do all people know that certain print sizes are "specialty" vs "standard"?

The hard part about drop-down menus is that they have to actively click on it to see that there are other options that may be what they are looking for. I've long been frustrated with the "prints for small cameras". My brother is going to purchase an Olympus E-500 (an SLR) - the cart will default to "prints for small cameras", which hardly describes the camera or the product. Clients are sure to be confused about that...

Not sure what the solution is though, but the current cart options have never felt right.
