I had been thinking in terms of the boats moving from bottom left to top right, but this is a pleasing view! Any chance of a smidgeon more space at the top, or is this the full frame?
The first shot seems crisper and I like its color more. I'm not entirely happy with the framing of #1 either. If you don't mind Photoshop shenanigans, I think it would be fairly easy to expand the canvas (anchored at the bottom) and fill in still water, then crop as desired. Just a thought.
If one considers the subject matter as both the boats and the wake shapes, which works because the wake size is significant and is such a stark contrast against the water, that first image works quite well. My only artistic suggestion is to deepen the black point and shift the tint a bit more to the right (to make the water even more brown. If you look at the histogram, make the green spike equidistant between the red and blue spikes.)
The formation and the image composition is very nice and reminds me of animal formations and jet formations.
I suspect that this is one of those images which translates better to a large sized print than to a computer monitor.
That is a very intriguing picture. My eyes follow the wake up to the boats nicely. Interesting - so I have to ask what was this all about? A military exercise it seems -- but where/ how did you get privvy to this scene?
Thanks for the comments and suggestions. I have no details on the boats. We were flying, in a turn, and happened to see them pop out from under us so I grabbed the camera and shot a few pictures (which explains the perspective change with the second image).
I like Richard's suggestion of adding a little more water to the top. I would then crop to eliminate most of the water on the left and right of the two outside wakes. This is a stunning catch by the way. thumb

Perhaps the boats could be travelling diagonally up the frame rather than straight up and down?
Thanks
It isn't cropped, so.. maybe next time
There's this oblique though
