In about 5 years, 3 of 4 of my OWC 2 gig RAM have gone bad. I guess cheapness comes with a steep price.

There is a HUGE difference between cheap and inexpensive ... and yes one can pay a huge price for being cheap.
sorry to hear that your ram is dying.

Sorry to hear that. In 15 years' I've never had a no-name ram module go bad (and I had plenty).
If you feel more secure buying branded ram go for Partiot, Adata, Crucial or similar. They are not
expensive either btw. One of many reasons why ram can get damaged is by variations in electricity
(power supply, grid current). A good power plug with surge protection and em shielding against
induced current is probably a good investment too if you don't already own one.

Thanks, Art. Yeah, me too- ram dying is like far worse than any case of extreme indigestion.

I got Crucial, suggested by a guy at MacWarehouse when I asked for something less costly than Viking and reliable. Thanks for your note about electricity. I use an APC battery supply so I don't think surge and constancy would be problems, but sometimes lightning hits near and that might do it (a hit about 100 yds. away fried a switch I was using, I think). If near hits can fry ram and other parts, is there any way to shield my machine in future to prevent problems? [I feel kinda skeptical about lightning causing the problem because the most recent failures happened more than 5 months after the last thunderstorm significant to where I live.]

Interestingly, I got a call from Steven at OWC- apparently they sort of comb the web for feedback and noted my comment here; then looked in their files for a purchaser in Cochranton ... and I'm the only one here. I've yet to speak with him directly, but his messages indicate a desire to make sure that I'm aware of their replacement guarantee and enthusiastic willingness to carry it out. It's really tempting but I'm not so sure it's worth risking yet more curious failure and the time, inconvenience and expense of diagnostics. Lol, on the other hand, I guess I could sort of view their ram as sort of toys... Unless my whole picture is distorted, Steven seems like a good rep ...

OWC is a fine company with great prices on good products, in my experience. I'm sure they'll take care of you.

Plus, their lifetime replacement policy is pretty awesome. thumb.gif

I've been using 16 Gb of Ram from OWC in my tower for several years, and I have a total of 24 Gb in three different laptops without issue for what that's worth.

i like the firm, and i get delivery overnight to the mid west in less than 24 hours. Their online chat help window is great too.

I'm going on 6 years with OWC ram in my iMac - no problems to date.

    Highly recommend.
