Press Conference

Last week, a member of a Neighborhood Watch group shot
and killed an unarmed teenager in Sanford, Florida. The shooter
was not arrested because Florida has a "Stand Your Ground"
law that allows a person to defend themselves if they feel they
are in danger.

The shooting has garnered national attention. All the networks
are in town filming and interviewing.

The press spent most of the day waiting around.

Some looked for a background for their report.

Finally, a city official appeared to make a statement.

Interesting coverage on this story. Can you tell me why you chose those particular focus points in #4 and the last one?

Do you mean on what was the camera focussed, or why I chose
the angle from which I photographed in #4? In #4, I have a shot
showing the resident's back (used here) and a shot showing the
interviewer's back and the resident's face. (not used)

My thought in selecting these images from the several that I
shot was featuring the reporters in action. They are the story
    here.

Had I been in Sanford yesterday, I would have photographed
the people of Sanford at the rally (and, if able, Al Sharpton who appeared),
and their grief and anger. I wasn't able to go, though.

There was no rally or gathering of residents today. The park where
yesterday's rally took place was back to normal...picnics in the
pavilions, a child's birthday party in the playground area, three
games of pick-up on the basketball courts, people feeding ducks
by the lake, and one city worker plucking up bits of trash from yesterday's
crowd. A double row of portable potties is the only visible remnant
    of yesterday's crowd.

I chose the last image just because I like it. That's my conception
of what the city official saw of the reporters...one huge lens
drilling in on him and ready to capture any mistake or flaw or
controversial statement on his part. The detached cameraman
represents the disinterest of the press in the personal aspect.
They're there for film and quotes and the subject matter is
    secondary to that.

I have a shot of the city official taken from behind the reporters
and cameramen, but it didn't fit with the limited number I chose
    to include here.

Sanford, by the way, is a city just up the road from the suburb
of Orlando in which I live. It's really part of the greater Orlando
    area.
