When I think of light weight, I think of a pod that can only handle 2 or 3 pounds max and my D300+50=500 weighs in at almost 9lbs....what is the most weight this pod would ever have to handle??
3 section or 4 section ... alum. or carbon?? you can find many really good pods in the $150 range (Giottos is what I use great 4 section pod that will easily handle a little over 20 lbs and is stable as most mountains.).... something I have found out...even tho a pod is rated for say 12 lbs capacity and you are shooting with a set up of 9 lbs...that light weight tripod will not be that stable on windy days....

    Good Luck.

EDIT: something else that need considering ...height of pod without the center column raised, what should it be, this is in accordance with your height??

"Carry easy" is somewhat relative. I have a Manfrotto 190XDB, with a decent ball head, which would have been in your budget when i got it, but now is probably a little bit more, if you need a heavier ball head. It will matter a little bit what lenses you want to use with it, how sturdy of a ball head you need. I consider it rather light weight, I wouldn't normally carry it backpacking, but short or day hiking the weight is maneagable. To add stability to it, because it isn't all that hefty, I tie my water bottle to the center column. I've left it out all night in moderately windy conditions (up to the point I'd worry about sandblasting my lens) to do startrails and found no bumps or shakes in my trails, supporting a 5D and wide angle lens.

Tthis was the tripod that we considered to optimize high stability and low price. I didn't find anything both cheaper and lighter that was stable enough to be worth carrying around. I'll be curious to see if anyone can recommend anything that is.
