Pretty Ugly bees

Two rather different bees. First 4 shots a rather ugly looking Melecta albifrons feeding on Euphorbia flowers. This is a cuckoo bee of the Hairy-footed Flower Bee, Anthophora plumipes. Last 2 shots my favourite rather pretty bee - The mason bee Osmia caerulescens- about 8mm long. These bees do laps of the garden and tend to have brief resting spots in exactly the same places each time. The two shots were on different laps but the bee is in almost exactly the same spot.

They look like punk bees to me... buzzed up the wrong side of the tracks... I wonder how often you get deformities and genetic differences in the insect population... I can imagine by comparison, it's a lot less likely for insects to see birth defects.... you may have found two of them...

can't say I have seen either species up here!
