Rim shots and darkness with a coke can

Been down to the studio again with my two partners in crime. We are working on the lighting...sometimes trying to get the basics, and sometimes playing with the light to see what we get.
This time, with Rim Lighting in mind, we took a few shots, to try to short light a portrait, and include a rim light to stop the head blending with the background.

and then we got silly with a coke can...

And the obligatory mono conversion, which I think adds more menace to the shot:

And the fun with a coke can shot:

Let me know what you think. :)

Short light usually refers to lighting the side of the face turned away from the camera which I'm not seeing here but I do like the light setup and the dramatic results in the B&W version...
I'm all for experimenting with lighting though....keep it up!

    Thanks Rey.
It can get very confusing with the terms used. There was a whole debate on another forum in one of my posts because of how people labelled a rim light, a backlight, or an accent light. They never did agree...

...I just thought that a light which lit a smaller portion of the side of the face, leaving a broader section in shadow, would be called short lighting. But it doesn't matter, really...we got the effect we were trying for irrespective of name. rolleyes1.gif

I am pleased with the results, too, and yes, the BW is the better image...nice and moody. :)

    Cheers. :)

It could...that's my fellow photographer, Tim. He's a teddy bear, really...not at all thug-like. :)

Short light.......measure from the nose to the ear when a head is turned. One section will be less when measured. The less side is lit and that would be a short light pattern. You lit the broader measurment so you've got a broad light (more like a broad rim if that is possible).

I like your experimentation and I like that people are defining terms.

My pick would be # 2 overall.

Well, it's shorter than the last short lighting we did! rolleyes1.gif

    Cheers folks. :)
