How do I get the thumbnail image for the category?

On smugmug.com, my categories are listed with a thumbnail. I understand categories don't have feature images; it looks like it just takes the most recent gallery in it and uses that gallery's feature image as the thumbnail.

Is there a way to get the category thumbnail image via the 1.3 api set? Or do I have to manually look for the last updated gallery in that category and display that gallery's thumbnail?
