Another trial shoot in the new studio. This time a gorgeous young lady called Hannah. Can't believe she thinks she's ugly!

Your thoughts on the image would be appreciated. Thanks. :)

Not to be a smart aleck, but why would anyone want to look up that pretty woman's nostril?

That's the first thing that popped into my head when I looked at the image. In most instances, faces are best seen when shot from slightly above

    I like nostrils!

No, I take your point, but it hasn't been the first thing that struck me with the photo to be honest. I don't think it's as drastic as some I have seen. :)

    Cheers

She seems to be a full figure gal and the broad lightin accentuates that . I do like the processing and expression.

I think the shot is good - the backlighting adds some dramatics to the shot.

But, if your client is concerned with her look, then this is not a very flattering angle.

Tis the enigma isn't to shoot outside the guidelines/rules or stay within. Did anyone see the results of Rangefinder's photo contest an issue or two ago? It features a pose almost exactly like this one except that the portrait was also a very low contrast image and yet the judges gave it first place out of all those entries. (I did not enter)

I'm not a huge fan of the pose nor the back lighting when it accentuates all the stray hairs in the manner in which it does here. And I agree with Charles, broad lighting is not the best choice for full figured people.
I must say though, she is a beautiful woman....

Thanks folks. It may not be the most flattering angle to some, but both the model and I like this image very much. Just goes to show, eh?
And it is also true that images that break the "rules" are often the photos we see in the top spots in competition, or in magazines etc. Not suggesting mine is a winner, but again, it takes all sorts, :)

    Thanks for looking in. :)

I'm on the side of why "up the nostril." That's the 1st thing I thought when I saw this. Second thought was wow - the processing is really good on this. I find the sliver of her right arm distracting though. As for the lighting, I tend to like broad lighting for some odd reason and definitely like it here. I'm not sure the backlighting really adds anothing though other than highlighting the stray hairs...

If your model is happy with the portrait then you are already a go.

Thanks folks. I do understand the citicism about the nostril thing, and I will be avoiding it a lot more in the future...to e fair we were concerned with getting some useable shots and didn't think enough about the poses. Lighting was more a focus in this shoot.

But yes, given that the sitter is very pleased (and all the more so because all the friends she has on Facebook and the like have commented on how beautiful she looks) then I think we did a good job. :)

The backlight was intended to cuse good separation from the BG. As this wasn't a paid for shoot, and the model was by no means a professional, we just went with what she had brought with her. She is willing to come and pose again for test shoots, and I am sure we will concentrate a little more on wardrobe, hair, pose, etc. :)

    Cheers all.

Nice to read the good points mentioned and am learning much from just such comments. So very helpful.
First thing I noticed was the background more than anything else and you fixed that neatly straight away. I liked the pose angle pretty much with no qualms at all save perhaps her left eye seems a little dark. Didn't even think to consider her open nostril, as seen, as being a possible issue in this image. But I get the point of caution in using such an angle. For me its a nice complementary photo of a lovely young lady which only needs a couple minor adjustments which you are thoughtfully attending to.

As mentioned and easily agree with...

From what I've seen so far your turning out some nice works in your new studio. :D

Thanks for that. We are practicing when we can...a bit less in the last few days as I am now back at work after a long absence. :(

I take in everything that's said and try to incorporate it as much as I can. Hopefully sometime in the future we will get some decent images and be able to charge for them...:)

    Cheers
